LASIK For Golfers

A 32-year-old professional golfer was referred to the Bochner Eye Institute for refractive surgery due to contact lens intolerance and dissatisfaction with his vision while wearing glasses on the course. He found that when not looking directly through the center of his glasses, he experienced significant distortion, which was particularly affecting his putting accuracy.

 

His refractive error in the right eye was -5.75-2.25 x 55, and in his left eye, it was -6.25 -1.75 x 75, both of which allowed for 20/20 acuity. Computerized corneal topography was normal, and the minimum corneal thickness was 560 microns in the right eye and 574 microns in the left eye.

 

After discussing the risks and benefits of LASIK, the golfer underwent the procedure using the Intralase femtosecond laser to create a 110-micron corneal flap, followed by correction with the Wavelight 500 kHz laser.

 

Postoperatively, he achieved uncorrected 20/20 vision in both eyes within a few days. He returned to the professional golf circuit just three weeks later and reported a noticeable improvement in seeing his long drives and visualizing the green’s slope for putting. Overall, his game improved, and he was extremely satisfied with the results.
