ENHANCING COMFORT, CLARITY AND PERFORMANCE.

A 33-year-old long-distance runner was referred to the Bochner Eye Institute for consideration of laser vision correction. He reported difficulty tolerating soft contact lenses and found glasses inconvenient, particularly during running.

PREOPERATIVE ASSESSMENT:

Refraction:

  • Right Eye: -4.75 -1.00 x 085 (20/20 BCVA)
    Left Eye: -5.50 -1.00 x 060 (20/20 BCVA)
  • Corneal Topography: No evidence of irregular astigmatism
  • Pachymetry:
    Right Eye: 530 µm
    Left Eye: 545 µm

After a thorough discussion of the risks and benefits, the patient elected to proceed with bilateral LASIK. The procedure was performed using a femtosecond laser (IntraLase) to create thin corneal flaps, followed by excimer laser treatment with the WaveLight 500 kHz system.

POSTOPERATIVE OUTCOME:

At one week postoperatively, the patient achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20 in both eyes. He resumed running at that time and expressed high satisfaction with his visual quality, particularly during physical activity.

KEY LEARNING POINTS:

For patients who engage in running – whether recreationally or competitively – LASIK offers a range of functional benefits that can significantly improve comfort, convenience, and overall performance.
Eliminating the need for corrective eyewear not only enhances visual clarity but also reduces the physical and environmental challenges often encountered during training and competition.

1.     ELIMINATION OF EYEWEAR-RELATED LIMITATIONS:

Glasses can slip, fog, or bounce during physical activity, and contact lenses are prone to dryness and discomfort, particularly in outdoor environments. LASIK removes these barriers, allowing for uninterrupted focus and comfort.

2.      IMPROVED PERIPHERAL VISUAL FIELDS:

Unlike glasses, which restrict side vision, LASIK provides unobstructed, natural peripheral vision. This is particularly advantageous in dynamic environments such as trail running or crowded race courses, where spatial awareness is critical to safety and performance.

3.     ENHANCED COMFORT IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS:

Sweat, rain, humidity, and wind can impair the performance of both glasses and contact lenses. LASIK enables runners to maintain consistent visual clarity and ocular comfort in all weather conditions.

4.     REDUCED RISK OF OCULAR SURFACE IRRITATION:

Runners frequently encounter dust, allergens, and sweat—all of which can become trapped beneath contact lenses, increasing the risk of irritation and even infection. LASIK eliminates the interface between the lens and ocular surface, reducing these risks.

5.     SIMPLIFIED PRE-RACE AND TRAVEL LOGISTICS:

LASIK obviates the need for spare lenses, cleaning solutions, prescription sunglasses, and lubricating drops. This simplification is particularly valuable for patients who travel frequently or participate in early-morning events.

6.     IMPROVED LOW-LIGHT AND NIGHT VISION:

Many LASIK patients report enhanced visual quality in dim or low-contrast environments. This benefit is especially relevant for runners training at dawn, dusk, or during nighttime events.h easier.

7.     FASTER VISUAL RECOVERY POST-EXERCISE:

Contact lens wearers often experience transient dry eye symptoms following prolonged exertion. By eliminating contact lens use, LASIK can facilitate faster post-exercise ocular surface recovery.

8.     INCREASED PSYCHOLOGICAL COMFORT AND FOCUS:

Freedom from eyewear reduces mental distraction and improves confidence, enabling runners to concentrate fully on pacing, navigation, and performance.

9.     ENHANCED SAFETY DURING ACTIVITY:

Clear, stable vision supports better environmental awareness, helping runners identify hazards, navigate terrain, and avoid injury—an essential benefit for both recreational and high-performance athletes.

10.   LONG-TERM VISUAL CONVENIENCE:

For patients who run regularly or compete frequently, LASIK represents a lifestyle-enhancing procedure with sustained functional and quality-of-life benefits, both athletically and professionally.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

For runners and other physically active individuals, LASIK offers distinct advantages—eliminating the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses while enhancing overall visual clarity and comfort. With minimal downtime, high satisfaction rates, and long-term stability, LASIK can significantly improve both performance and quality of life for appropriately selected patients.
