Customs and Immigration
When traveling by air, your flight attendant will give you a "Customs Immigration Form" to complete prior to your arrival in Canada. This brief form simply asks a few questions, the agent will stamp or mark the form and return it to you. After collecting your luggage, deliver the form to the customs agent and exit to the arrival lobby for access to ground transportation.
Goods and Services Tax (GST)
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 6% tax charged on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. Visitors can claim a rebate of the GST paid on short-term accommodation of less than one month, and on most goods bought to take home. You can apply for a rebate if your total claim is for at least $6-CAD of GST. You have one year from the day you bought the goods and/or accommodation to claim your GST rebate. Fill out a Revenue Canada application (include original bills of sale); mail to Revenue Canada or take it to a participating Canadian Duty Free Shop.
Currency Exchange
Foreign currency can be changed into Canadian funds at any bank or exchange house. Some identification may be required. Many retail stores, gas stations, motels, hotels, and restaurants accept American Currency. Please note, however, that at banks and exchange houses visitors are likely to receive a better exchange rate for their American currency. Virtually every major credit card is accepted in Canada as well.
