Since its inception in 1929, the Bochner Eye Institute has been in the forefront of ophthalmology. Its founder, Dr. Maxwell K. Bochner (1900-1967), was also a founding member of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and was chief of staff at both Mount Sinai and Scarborough General Hospital. A specialist in cataracts and diseases of the eye, Dr. Bochner was known for his careful and thorough diagnostic technique and is remembered for saving the eyesight, and the lives, of many people.
Today, Dr. Harold Stein, Dr. Albert Cheskes, and Dr. Raymond Stein are the medical directors of the Bochner Eye institute. Together, they represent 85 years of experience as practicing ophthalmologists. The Bochner institute remains steadfast in its mission of providing the best possible eye care for its patients and the highest degree possible of communication between patient and care-provider. They strive to provide a level of caring and compassion for their patients modeled on Dr. Bochner's example. The directors and staff of the Bochner Eye Institute are proud to continue serving the Toronto area and beyond.
Drs. Harold and Raymond Stein and Albert Cheskes were among the first to perform laser surgery in North America they regularly treat patients from all corners of the globe. Recognition of its leadership role in ophthalmic surgery and its commitment to excellence can be seen in the significant number of ophthalmologists and optometrists who seek treatment there. The directors of the Bochner Eye Institute are regularly invited to speak and give seminars at meetings, clinics, and ophthalmic conferences around the world.
The commitment of Drs. Harold and Raymond Stein and Albert Cheskes to the future of the Bochner Eye Institute as well as the future of eye care is embodied into the Stein/Cheskes Laser Centre of the Bochner Eye Institute.
The laser centre houses the latest technological advances in laser vision correction including the Allegretto Wave and VISX Star S4, as well as viewing facilities for educational purposes, which also enable relatives and prospective patients to watch live procedures. Sophisticated tests are also part of the Bochner tradition.
